Stahn Aileron is a country bumpkin who wants to explore the world. Fulfilling his wish, he decided to be a stowaway on the airship Draconis. During his stay there, the ship gets attacked by a mob of monsters. At the same time, he finds Dymlos, a Swordian, in the storage. Forming a pact with Dymlos, he escapes the ship with his newfound powers. Later, he joins other Swordian Masters in their quest to stop mankind from harnessing the power of the Eye of Atamoni...

| >> Characters |
 |
Stahn Aileron
[Voiced by Tomokazu Seki]
>>Stahn lost both of his parents at a young age, so his grandfather raised him as well as his younger sister, Lilith. He left his family and his town behind in search of adventure against his family's wishes. He hopes his adventure will enable him to someday become a master swordsman. He can't stand evildoers, and tries to help people who need help (or even people who don't need it!). So, Stahn and trouble have become fast friends. Stahn is not exactly what you would call an early riser, so he can be grouchy in the morning.
>>Wields the swordian Dymlos. |
 |
Rutee Katrea/Catret
[Voiced by Yuka Imai]
>>Rutee is a Lens hunter who always travels with her partner Mary. Rutee is crazy for Lens and anything else that might turn her a tidy profit- so much so that some people think of her as a profiteering thief instead of a heroine. And she seems to have a hidden agenda that doesn't help her image at all...
>>Wields the swordian Atwight. |
 |
Leon/Lion Magnus
[Voiced by Hikaru Midorikawa]
>>At the tender age of 16, Leon is the youngest master swordsman in history to serve the Kingdom of Seinegald. Leon appears to be level-headed on the surface, but he actually tends to be an impatient emotional firecracker with a very short fuse. He can be patronizing yet kind to people he likes- in other words, Leon's someone who can be extremely difficult to get along with.
>>Wields the swordian Chaltier. |
 |
Philia Felice/Philis
[Voiced by Kikoku Inoue]
>>Phillia is an ex-priestess from Straylize Temple who used to research the secrets of the Ancients. Soft-spoken and mild-mannered, people soon learn that she can be a formidable force to be reckond with. She seems to have a srange, strained relationship with Stahn, and Rutee...
>>Wields the swordian Clemente. |
 |
Garr/Woodrow Kelvin
[Voiced by Sho Hayami]
>>Garr is the first son of the King Sark of the Kingdom of Pahndaria. His understanding father gives him the freedom to seek his fortune in adventures, but that doesn't mean he takes life for granted. On the contrary, he can be extremely serious. He's cool, calm, and collected in a jam, and has a knack for seeing straight into the heart of complex matters. He's also a good-looking fellow on top of all this.
>>Wielder of the swordian Igtentos. |
 |
Mary Argent/Agent
[Voiced by Yuri Amano]
>>Rutee's partner in crime, Mary is a warrior who can only remember her first name. It's really hard to tell if she has amnesia or is just plain dense. Mary is usually quiet and doesn't show much emotion. However, she is known to go into a wild frenzy during battles |
 |
Karyl/Johnny Sheeden
[Voiced by Koichi Yamadera]
>>Karyl comes from an old aristrocratic family, but has distanced himself from his clan. He wanders the world playing his songs to anyone who's willing to listen. He appears to be flaky and mercurial in his ways...or at least seems to be most of the time. Is he just a playboy out to have fun or does he have some kind of hidden agenda? Is his clowning around just an act? It's really hard to tell. |
 |
Bruiser Khang/Mighty Kongman
[Voiced by Tessho Genda]
>>Bruiser is an apt name for this world-famous martial artist. Although he has grown vain because of his fame as the #1 undefeated champion fighter in the world, he can be a loyal and fearless fighter. Bruiser's an expert in the use of all kinds of weapons and armor, but he really prefers to take out his enemies the old-fashioned way- with his bare hands! |
 |
Chelsea Torn/Tone
[Voiced by Naoko Watanabe]
>>Chelsea is the granddaughter of Alba, Garr's archery master. Like her grandfather, Chelsea's archery skills are astounding to say the least. She's wise beyond age, and sometimes surpries others with her insight. We say sometimes because her wit can miss the mark completely. Also, it's a good thing she travels with her friends because she has a tendency to get lost. She's get lost on her way to breakfast if it weren't for her sense of smell! |
 |
Lilith Aileron
>>Stahn's sister and a secret character that can only be accessed by using a cheat device or through a glitch. The glitch can only be used in the initial release of the Japanese version. |

Tales of Destiny Review by sukotsuto. Originally posted in Amazon.com (as sukotsuto) and Gamespot.com (as "ransu").
Funny to think that before I even got to play this, I've already played FFVII, Wild Arms, Breath of Fire 3, and other RPGS circa 1997-98 and yet this game, I have to say, is my favorite among them all. A friend of mine had a copy and said it sucks but when I tried it, I was completely mesmerized over how awesome this game is, especially THE battles. I've tried all sorts of RPGS in the past but even up to now, I still consider the battles in Namco's "Tales" series to be the most action-packed and fun... the BEST for me to sum it up fully. ToD may have a slightly high encounter rate (which can be lessened by using a certain item) but what about it if the battles are exciting?
Graphics? If you like SNES-esque 2D graphics at its best, ToD is simply a keeper. If not, you might be initially turned off by this game. Then again, if graphics matter most to you then you might be more interested in a prettier, but shallow and uninspired games that only take a few or so hours to finish. It's no question that the developers who worked on this game emphasized more on what is skin deep. Bad strategy to lure the 3Dphiles at the time (who were astonished by abything 3D) but for RPG old-schoolers of the SNES era, most of them would see how good this game can be. And the anime intro of this game is really cool.
The BGM music is a-ok... not as memorable as that offered by, lets say, final fantasy or wild arms, but it's still pretty nice since it matches the game well enough. There are a few fast tunes that would stay in your head (well, for me anyway). As for the voices, they retained the japanese voices instead of handing it to amateurish dubbers of that era... GOOD MOVE! The japanese voices are awesome (although it may annoy some who doesn't have trained ears for words that don't sound english), with some famous seiyuu voicing out the character's battle voices. A definite treat for anime fans!
The story may turn on some, turn off others, but overall, the characters are the driving plot of this game and once you get a liking of any of the characters here, you would enjoy the story immensely. I have to say the dialogue is pretty well-scripted, as well as translated impeccably (that's a positive word, folks), with a few funny and witty dialogue and in-jokes. This converts a seemingly tried-and-true RPG elements into something very light and enjoyable feel on a slightly cliched but well-written story.
This is the game that started me on the tales series, and what a series it is! And I find it ironic that certain game sites rated this game low whereas the people who actually played this game thouroughly see the game in high regards.
By the way, I've played all sorts of great games before in my friend's place before, and when I finally bought my own playstation, ths is the first game I bought (after trying it out in a friend's place). Even though I have the money to do so, I haven't bought another game for months. I just plain love this game!
