Tales of Graces (previously code-named "
Tales of 10") is one of the latest Tales mothership titles and was released on
December 10, 2009. It is said to be inspired by medieval Europe and is the second Tales game for the Nintendo Wii (the first being
Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World). That said, it has been confirmed to be playable with the Wii Remote + Nunchuk and the Classic Controller Pro. The game's "genre name", a known staple of the series, is 「守る強さを知るRPG」 (
mamoru tsuyosa wo shiru RPG, translated as "
To Know the Strength to Protect RPG"). Graces is the first 3D project of the team usually in charge of the 2D Tales games (a.k.a.
Team Destiny) and features characters designed by the renowned
Mustumi Inomata. It was expected to be the longest Tales game, with the story alone to supposedly span 70 hours of gameplay, though some fans consider it to be not that long.
Graces introduces a new battle system called
SS-LMBS or the "
Style Shift Linear Motion Battle System". This new system lets characters "shift" between their available two different fighting styles. The game includes the "
Around Step" system which lets characters side-step around the target in a 360-degree line. It still also does incorporate the Free Run system, made popular by
Tales of the Abyss and
Tales of Vesperia, though it does not play a major role in the system. It also uses the
CC (
Chain Capacity) system which was first used in the PS2 remake of
Tales of Destiny. Also from Tales of Destiny are
Blast Calibers, or hi-ougis, for the characters.
The field map of Graces is considered seamless, meaning that the game doesn't have a world map. Graces will take place in one big interconnected world, with transition between areas having no interruptions. The game also uses the same skit system used in Tales of Destiny 2 and Tales of Rebirth, which has portraits of the characters from the waist up doing the talking. A DS mini-game called "
Kamenin Merchant" will also be included in the game to be downloaded to your Nintendo DS via DS Download Play.
The anime scenes in the game will be once again by
Production I.G. and the game's main composer is
Motoi Sakuraba. The opening theme, 「まもりたい~White Wishes~」 (
I Want to Protect It ~White Wishes~,
mamoritai ~White Wishes~) is by the Korean singer
BoA. Another version of BoA's single called the "Tales of Graces version" will also be released, including a serial code for a
BoA Original Costume for the game.
Pre-orders for Tales of Graces began on
October 1, 2009. Aside from the usual pre-order bonus DVD, those who will pre-order will receive a "
Vesperia Dress-Up Costume Download Code" (tentative) which will let the Graces characters have Tales of Vesperia costumes (Asbel=Yuri, Cheria=Rita and Sophie=Patty confirmed so far). Those who will pre-order in Japan, they will receive a Graces-themed postcard.
