ToP is the game that started the Tales of Series. Character designs were done by Kosuke Fujishima, more known for his work on Ah! My Godess!. ToP was considered great back then, having a real-time linear motion battle system. It was then remade for the PSX, and is considered the best version out of all its platforms. A remake for the GBA was done, but was a bit unfavorable due to some problems with the battle system(strange why this version was given a US release, huh?). Namco's also planning to make a fully-voiced PSP version. Aside from this, Geneon Entertainment also made a 4-episode OVA of the game entitled, "Tales of Phantasia: The Animation". The latest version of ToP that is to be released is for the PSP, a fully-voiced version of ToP.

| >> StoryLine |
Long before the actual story of the game, the Demon Lord Dhaos wreaked havoc in the land of Aselia. Four warriors, still unknown at the beginning, were able to seal him off using the power of two pendants.
Years later, young swordsman Cless Alvein and his bestfriend, the archer Chester Barklight of the village of Totus go off on a hunting trip, only to find their village razed to the ground when they returned. During the massacre, Chester's little sister Amy and both of Cless' parents get killed.
After a series of events, Cless meets the cleric, Mint Adnade, who mysteriously holds a pendant similar to that Cless' father gave to him. Later, they realize that these are the keys that seals off Dhaos power. Unfortunately, they are too late, and the Dhaos is revived. They are then sent to 100 years in the past in order to find more powerful warriors to aid them. And so, their journey begins...

The first time I played this game, it sort of reminded me of Final Fantasy I. The graphics were not that good, but of course, this is understandable because I was playing the SFC version. One thing I didn't like about this game was the annoyingly high encounter rate. It was like, having an enemy encounter EVERY 10 SECONDS. Aside from that, I found the storyline quite unoriginal. It was sort of like a mixture of Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy I. The only parts that I sort of(read:sort of) liked were the character designs(fell in love with Arche and Chester right away^^) and the real-time linear motion battle system. And one thing I didn't understand about this franchise was why the GBA version was the one released in the US, and not the PSX version. The PSX version was considerably better than the GBA one. Oh yeah, and I also liked the OP sequence, even though the US SFC version didn't have that. But all in all, I have to say that this game is actually better than Tales of the Tempest. Why? Read my review for ToT to find out.

Not exactly a great game, but as a revolution to the old fashioned click and wait, it's good enough.
