| >> About the Game |
Tales of Symphonia is considered to be the best Tales of game from the series. This game is also considered to be the fifth to be released for the series. It was first released for the GameCube, with the theme song Starry Heavens sung by Day After Tomorrow. A PS2 version was made available in Japan only, featuring a new theme song, Soshite Boku Ni Dekiru Koto, also sung by Day After Tomorrow.
The game was produced by Namco. It is the fifth main installment in the Tales RPG series, taking place long before Tales of Phantasia (hence a distant prequel), and was the third in the series to be officially released in the U.S. in many years. One notable characteristic of the game is its art direction by Kosuke Fujishima, a renowned Japanese manga-ka famous for his work on other Tales Series games and the anime Ah! My Goddess!.
In 2007, Ufotable will release an OVA in Japan based Tales of Symphonia.

|
In the declining world of Sylvarant, the Chosen One, along with loyal guardians who protect her, must undergo a pilgrimage to pray for the Chosen One's ascension as an angel and awaken the summoning spirits from their seal. By doing so, the land will flourish with mana; the source of all life, at the end of the journey... for a great cost. Is there more to this 2000 year old tradition that meets the eye? Or will mankind be forever bound to this eternal cycle? Little do people know, there are two worlds that share the same fate, and for centuries, the source of mana goes back and forth between worlds, a seemingly unending chain of fate. In a tale that goes beyond worlds, our heroes strive to unite the people as one world without prejudice and save the world from the shackles of destiny.

| >> Characters |
 |
Lloyd Irving
>>Lloyd is the main protagonist of the story. He is an orphan raised by Dirk, his dwarven father, and both of them live in the outskirts of Iselia village. An unremarkable student in school with terrible grades, he is a frequent target of scolding and punishment by his teacher Raine. He is very close friends and classmates with Colette, the Chosen One, and Genis, Raine's little genius brother. By a twist of fate, he and Genis became the Chosen One's guardians during her pilgrimage. With his potential skill as a fighter who wields dual blades, the courage of a true hero and an indifferent attitude to all, he becomes quite a force to reckon with in changing the world, despite his subpar academic history. |
 |
Colette Brunel
>>Colette is the current generation's Chosen One and Lloyd's childhood friend. Although this soft-spoken gal is a bit of a klutz, she is strong-willed and responsible, even given the fact that she bears the world's burdens on her shoulders. She seeks not protection from others and won't hesitate to sacrifice herself for the sake of the world, making her somewhat unselfish and daring.. |
 |
Genis/Genius Sage
>>Genis is the Lloyd's best friend and Raine's younger brother. He is the smartest in school and is a very talented spellcaster, but this may be the reason why he sometimes look down on others (but caring to the elderly). He and his older sister are half-elves, although they initially pass themselves as elfs to avoid prejudice. He is also a great cook, in contrast to that of his sister's terrible cooking. |
 |
Raine/Refill Sage
>>Raine is the teacher of the Iselia's school and Genis' older sister. She has great knowledge of archaelogy and magical arts, although she has a rather unhealthy passion for the former. If Lloyd or Genis does something wrong, she won't hesitate to use physical means of punishment, much to the chagrin of the two friends. Raine and her little brother are half-elves, although they state they are elfs to avoid discrimination. She also tries to hide her hydrophobia, which was caused by something that happened during her childhood. She is a logical thinker and a great healer, making her quite an invaluable addition to the party. Her cooking is abhorrent, in contrast to that of her little brother's excellent cooking skills. |
 |
Kratos Aurion
>>A mysterious mercenary hired to accompany the Chosen on her pilgrimage, he is cool, logical and a very skilled swordsman, with swordmanship exceeding that of Lloyd. His personality is always in conflict to that of Lloyd's, which is his polar opposite. Despite the differences, they respect each other to a certain extent. Due to his mysterious demeanor, he seems to harbor a hidden agenda... |
 |
Sheena/Shihna Fujibayashi
>>Sheena is a beautiful and voluptous assassin sent from the prospering world of Tethe'alla to the declining world of Sylvarant. Her mission is to assasinate Sylvarant's Chosen in an effort to save her world from decline. She is rather indecisive, especially about her feelings. She is also a frequent target of Zelos' teasing and flirting, much to her annoyance. In battle, she uses cards infused with magic and the power of the summoning spirits. |
 |
Zelos Wilder
>>Zelos is the Chosen One ot Tethe'alla. Due to his status and looks he can easily charm the women he meets, forging his rather narcisstic and arrogant personality. He is also rather carefree and free-spirited, showing signs of unwilling attitude of his role as the Chosen of Tethe'alla. He is always the life of the party, sometimes cheering them, sometimes annoying them. He is also a good fighter usingboth sword and magic. |
 |
Presea Combatir
>>Presea is an lumberjack and axwoman whose strength, despite her size, is beyond that of normal human capacity - made possible by a special Exsphere she has equipped. She can easily lift axes and wood your average strongman struggles to move. The downside of the equipped Exspere it supresses her humanity, aeemingly stopping her aging and making her persona seem rather robotic. She has been called a monster due to this and her very unusual habits at her home. With her superhuman strength, she can wield large axes easily, thus, making her quite a powerhouse in battle. |
 |
Regal Bryant
>>Regal is a prisoner hired to capture the Chosen of Sylvarant under orders of the Pope. For a prisoner, he behaves with the dignity of a gentleman. Though quiet and grim in appearance, his manner of speaking highly denotes such with his thought-out words of wisdom. He joins the party upon seeing Presea, whom she may or may not have a connection with in the past. He never removes his shackles for some reason. Despite that handicap he is a very skillful fighter with a bit of healing magic, using only his legs armed with greaves in battle. It is quite possible that he is much, much stronger if he doesn't handicap himself too much... |

This game is definitely an improvement from Tales of Destiny 2. From the old 2D style, the Tales Studio went a step further and introduced 3D graphics to the Tales Series. This was happily accompanied by the introduction of the much loved Affection System, wherein you can decide who Lloyd is paired up with in the game, besides the main female protagonist Colette. This game really was the stepping stone of the Tales Series into the PS2 world (coughignoreToD2cough), with a lot of amazing skill effects, and not to mention a very interesting story plot.
In terms of game play, this game really takes the cake. There are a lot of sidequests involved, promising at least up to 70 hours of happy gameplay. Not to mention, a very fun way to spend most of your hours wherein you should just be doing homework^^ (oops).
Again, it's just another classic Tales Series game. The most annoying part of it is that the PS2 version never got released internationally. Meaning, the access of this awesome game was limited to GameCube owners, or to be more precise, Nintendo fan boys and girls. Can you believe that I had to invade my neighbor the whole summer of 2005 just to play and finish this game?!
  But, that's another story...

A must play, a must see, a must have, a must... whatever. You guys get what I mean. This game is simply one of the best. Too bad about the whole GameCube users only though.
