|
Tales of the Abyss is the latest Tales game to be released in the US and the second latest to be released in Japan, right before Tales of the Tempest. Kosuke Fujishima (ToP, ToS) graces us once again with his presence with this great epic. The game is in full 3D, and offers the Flex Range Linear Motion Battle System (FR-LMBS), allowing players to roam anywhere on the battlefield. This game is said to be the current rival of Tales of Symphonia for the title of "Best Tales Game".

| >> StoryLine |
In the world of Auldrant, Fonons are the main composition of all things, giving life to everyone residing on it. Here, everyone relies on the prophecy known as "The Score". The Score dictates everything that is to happen in Auldrant, and not following it is considered as a crime against the Order of Lorelei, its keepers.
Enter Luke fon Fabre, the son of the Duke of the Kingdom of Kimlasca-Lanvaldear. When he was just ten years old, he was kidnapped by the enemy empire, Malkuth. This left him with a devastating trauma; he forgot all his memories from before he was kidnapped. Ever since then, he has been forced to remain in the mansion, never knowing what life is on the outside.
Seven years after the incident, the arrival of a mysterious woman in the Fabre Manor causes Luke to be spirited away halfway across the world, to the Malkuth Empire. There, he gets caught in the businesses of the Order of Lorelei and the Score, throwing himself in the abyss of his undeniable destiny...

| >> Characters |
 |
Luke fon Fabre
[Voiced by Chihiro Suzuki (JP) and Yuri Lowenthal (US)]
>>Luke is the main protagonist of this story. He has been cooped up in his manor for seven years, and is now thrown into the outside world, spoiled and ignorant. He grows out of this little complex, and later finda himself becoming the savior of Auldrant.
(SPOILER:He is not the real Luke fon Fabre, but a replica that was sent back to the manor when Luke was kidnapped.)

 |
Tear Grants
[Voiced by Yukana (JP) and Heather Halley/a> (US)]
>>Tear Grants is a soldier from the Order of Lorelei. She can seem cold at times, but she actually has a very feminine side, which is elaborately shown by her love of cute things. She is a Melodist Seventh Fonist, a fonist who uses mostly Fonic Hymns to heal others.
(SPOILER: She is the younger sister of Van(not much of a spoiler, eh?). Also, Legretta the Quick was her former teacher. Aside from that, she is said to be a descendant of Yulia, the one who made The Score. This is said to be the reason why she uses different Fonic Hymns from all the other Melodists. Aside from that, her real name is Mystearica, or Mestearika in the Japanese version)

 |
Guy Cecil
[Voiced by Yasunori Matsumoto (JP) and Johnny Yong Bosch (US)]
>>Guy is a servant to the House of Fabre, and is sort of the only friend Luke had when he was kept in the manor. Guy has gynophobia(fear of women) because of a past event that happened to him.
(SPOILER:His real name is Gaillardia Galan Galdos. He is of royal blood, from the house of Gardios. Duke Fabre invaded Gardios house and slaughtered his family before him. All the women there, as well as his sister, rushed to protect him, but they were also massacred. Having the dead bodies of all these women triggered Guy's gynophobia. He was then captured and and made a servant for the House of Fabre. He has been living his life in the manor, thinking only of revenge. He changed his mind after being good friends with Luke though.)

 |
Natalia Luzu Kimlasca-Lanvaldear
[Voiced by Michiko Neia (JP) and Stephanie Sheh (US)]
>>Natalia is the princess of Kimlasca. She is engaged to be married to Luke, who is considered as the tertiary heir to the throne. She is quite proud of herself, being brought up in the castle. Ahe's also a horrible cook^^
(SPOILER: She is not the real princess of Kimlasca, but actually the daughter of a mercenary and one of the maids in the castle. Having found out that the real Natalia would never be alive, she was taken from her real parents, and was said to be the princess. The reason she is Luke's fiance is because she claims that Luke proposed to her when they were young, but in reality, it was Asch who proposed to her. This places her in a difficult position, choosing between Luke and Asch)

 |
Jade Curtiss
[Voiced by Takehito Koyasu (JP) and Kirk Thornton (US)]
>>Jade is a colonel from the Malkuth Empire, although many claim that he has the ability to get an even higher rank than that. He is a cunning man, despite his always smiling face. He is known by many as "Jade the Necromancer", and is feared by most of those he has already encountered. Some say he is the right-hand man of Peony the Ninth, Malkuth's emperor. He is also known for his excellent mastery of the Fonic Artes.
(SPOILER:He is the inventor of Fomicry, a way of making the replicas. He, Nephry(his sister), Dist, and Peony were once students of retired Locrian General Nebilim. But because of his meddling with the impossible, he caused Nebilim her death. After failing in the attempt to make a replica of her, he gave up Fomicry research)
|
 |
Anise Tatlin
[Voiced by Haruko Momoi (JP) and Melissa Fahn (US)]
>>Anise is ranked as the Fon Master Guardian. It's her job to keep an eye on Fon Master Ion. It's her plan in life to marry into money, and even sets his eyes on Luke at the start of the game. She is a puppet master, and controls her doll, Tokunaga, in battle by making it huge and riding on it.
(SPOILER:She is actually a spy working for Grand Maestro Mohs because her family owes a great debt to the moron(^^;).)
|
 |
Fon Master Ion
[Voiced by Ikue Otani (JP) and Erin Fitzgerald (US)]
>>Ion is the Fon Master of the Order of Lorelei. He is the leader of the Order. He uses Daathic Fonic Artes, but refrains from doing so because it considerably weakens his body.
(SPOILER:He is actually just a replica of the original Ion, along with Florian and Sync the Tempest... Oh yeah, he dies in the game T_T..)
|
 |
Mieu
[Voiced by Miki Maruyama (JP) and Sandy Fox (US)]
>>Mieu is a Cheagle. Cheagles are creatures that are considered holy by the order because of their pact with Yulia. Mieu wears the Sorcerer Ring around his belly, giving him the power of human speech. He can breathe fire, and is usually used(by Luke most of the time) as a convenient tool to get through forests and dungeons.

This has got to be the BEST Tales game ever! Graphics are amazing, and the story line is one of the most unique ones I've ever seen... Well, maybe except for the part where Luke cuts his hair, 'cause it sort of reminded me of Dagger/Garnet from Final Fantasy IX.
For one thing, the voice acting was terrific, both in the Japanese and English versions! There was this nice ambiance in the game, giving it this sort of "paper" theme.
Battles are great to watch and play, considering the graphics and cool Fonic Arted/Hi-Ougis. One thing I didn't really like in the game was the camera angles. There were, sad to say, some parts of the game where the camera would've been better if it were closer, or vice versa.
In terms of gameplay, this game featured almost 180 hours of gameplay, giving it a high score in the gameplay factor. There are a LOT of sidequests, enough to make you go crazy^^; This game is so versatile, it rivals the everpopular Tales of Symphonia, another masterpiece by Kosuke Fujishima. Although, Symphonia would still be able to beat this game because of many factors I cannot elaborate here^^.
All in all, it's one of the best games I've ever played for the PS2, perhaps even bette than Final Fantasy XI if you consider its splendid humor. This is a MUST have.
