Tales of Xillia is the Tales of Series's 15th Japanese Anniversary game, and the latest mothership game to be released for the series. It is the third Tales game third Tales game to be released for the PlayStation 3(the first being
Tales of Vesperia and the second being
Tales of Graces F). Tales of Xillia can be considered as probably the biggest game in the whole of the series, with various leaps such as having both a male and female "main" protagonist whose paths in the game you can decide to take, both Mutsumi Inomata and Kosuke Fujishima in charge of alternating designs for the characters, having ufotable in charge of the game's animated cutscenes, having interactive fields, three types of skits/chats and extensively greater graphics. The game's "genre name", a known staple of the series, is 「揺るぎなき信念のRPG」 (
yuruginaki shinnen no RPG, translated as "
An RPG of Unwavering Convictions").
Xillia's new battle system called
DR-LMBS or the "
Double Raid Linear Motion Battle System". This new system allows two characters to be "linked" together to perform a tandem of coordinated attacks. The system also incorporates the use of both an Assault Counter (similar to CC in
Graces and
Destiny PS2) and the usual Technical Points (TP).
The anime scenes, as stated above, are by
ufotable this time around, the same company in charge of the Tales of Symphonia OVAs. The game's main composer is
Motoi Sakuraba. The opening theme, 「progress」 is by popular J-Pop singer
Ayumi Hamasaki.
Xillia can be considered as the Tales game that has brought the most hype, having a total of three other bundle packs aside from the normal game, and having the pre-order slots for these said packs be sold out even a few mere hours after pre-orders were opened in some online shopping sites. The game actually brought about a bit of trouble with the said shopping sites due to high demand.
The pre-order bonuses for the game include a download code
